"I did theater for ten years and this practice allowed me to realize that, in close-up as on stage, mentalism is also theater. But it is a particular theater: the spectator enters without knowing his text, his role, or even the story in which he has just set foot. He discovers the piece while playing it. This situation creates a very strong responsibility for the artist: he must guarantee the planned progress, protect the participant, give him clear guidelines, and ensure that his intervention is always interesting, comfortable and entertaining.
This is why you must master your text, your breathing and your choreography, while allowing the improvisation necessary for audience participation. The more precise the structure, the freer the viewer can seem; the more the path is prepared, the more spontaneous the encounter can seem. Theatrical mentalism therefore does not consist of reciting a piece in front of the audience, but of invite the public into a room that they discover with you.
In this book, I have brought together five experiences of theatrical and participatory mentalism. A mental journey for several people, a coincidence between History and my personal story, a fruity prediction, a Russian roulette where I survive the audience, and an improbable game that I presented hundreds of times at the start of my show The Wish.
No playing cards, no memory, no difficult technique, no electronics, phones or apps, no dual reality or risky psychology, no complicated or expensive props, no accomplices or assistants.
Some effects are simple and quick, others are longer and narrative. All of them can be made with materials that are easy to find or make yourself. Despite the title of the book, these effects are presentable both in close-up and on stage.
I give a lot of detail on my text and my presentation: experience has shown me that this makes the difference between a method that works or not, and between an impact that touches the public or not. This does not mean that my text and my presentation are sacred; I'm just sharing with you what works for me. By explaining to you my reasons behind certain phrases and actions, I encourage you to adapt my ideas to your own style.
Journey, memory, offering, cruelty, luck... Each theme has been designed to engage the public, and sometimes invite participants to become the heroes, rather than a passive spectator in front of a demonstration of your powers. I hope you will have as much pleasure discovering these effects as I have presenting them. Now it's up to you to share them with your audience."
