Have we never been able to see, in front of the Tricks of Notre-Dame or on the cobblestones of the Pont-Neuf, not far from the wire of a rope dancer or the table of a player of goblets, beyond an assembly watching the exercises of the tightrope walker or listening to the spiel of the conjurer, some rope player? What would have presented the one who practiced between the Thief or the Genovese and Master Gonin, between Forioso or Ravel and Miette? What would it have looked like?

“The sweet joy” is a routine which will allow, if not to rediscover what it was, to get an idea of what it could have been. The techniques on which it is based are not old, nor are the materials used, so that this attempt will seem futile. It will then present itself as a pretext to describe a string routine in three parts (“The four seasons”, “The reminder of the birds”, “Anabasis”) followed by a small goodbye piece (“The sun on the branch”) of more recent inspiration.

This routine is followed by “Repères” in which conjurers are notably mentioned who have put on a rope number with text or without words such as Jacques Delord with “The legend of the sailor on his last voyage” or Pierre Edernac with “Symphony on a single string”. These acts were developed from the 1960s and will be presented in Parisian cabarets on both banks of the Seine. Their creators do not know it yet, but they will embody, in spite of themselves and in their own way, the last conjurers of an era.
