You will discover in this book:

  • A brand new rope routine, explained in detail (with illustrations)
  • New techniques that you can reuse later
  • An in-depth historical study of string magic, looking in detail at the major magicians who practiced this discipline
  • Analyzes on what makes a rope routine touch the audience, all in a style borrowed from the author's own poetry.

After the publication of the book The lame magician A few years ago, Guillaume Pavot returned with a new work, which forms an almost exhaustive study of string routines. Everything is there: profusion of historical sources sourced with absolute rigor, analysis of famous routines (Jean Merlin, Pierre Edernac, Jacques Delord, etc.) but also the author's own routine, explained with great detail and drawings. Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of strings, and in the pages of this book where the biggest names are gathered around a common poetry...

“La Douce Joie, a strange title, for a book that really goes off the beaten track.

Much more than a routine, resolutely poetic, Guillaume Pavot offers us just as much a literary stroll, and incredibly rich in references, on most of the great actors, over time, of the so rare magic of the strings...

Also note the style of the illustrations, of rare elegance, and the erudition of the author, young as well as passionate!…

It is a “Sweet Joy” that is deserved, as its meanders are multiple... For all lovers of the art of string magic, as well as all those, researchers of our magical history...

If you like the books of Jacques Delord, this “Sweet Joy” will satisfy you… like a treasure chest that you will have to unearth.” - Gaëtan Bloom

“SWEET JOY…a book with double joy!
– The joy of discovering an original and poetic rope routine created by Guillaume Pavot.
– The pleasure of having in your hands an exhaustive and quasi-university study of the history of String Magic throughout the world.

A work to be possessed by all Magicians and historians keen to deepen their knowledge of the ART of the rope. » - Francis TABARY

In detail...

Have we never been able to see, in front of the Tricks of Notre-Dame or on the cobblestones of the Pont-Neuf, not far from the wire of a rope dancer or the table of a player of goblets, beyond an assembly watching the exercises of the tightrope walker or listening to the spiel of the conjurer, some rope player? What would have presented the one who practiced between the Thief or the Genovese and Master Gonin, between Forioso or Ravel and Miette? What would it have looked like?

“The sweet joy” is a routine which will allow, if not to rediscover what it was, to get an idea of what it could have been. The techniques on which it is based are not old, nor are the materials used, so that this attempt will seem futile. It will then present itself as a pretext to describe a string routine in three parts (“The four seasons”, “The reminder of the birds”, “Anabasis”) followed by a small goodbye piece (“The sun on the branch”) of more recent inspiration.

This routine is followed by “Repères” in which conjurers are notably mentioned who have put on a rope number with text or without words such as Jacques Delord with “The legend of the sailor on his last voyage” or Pierre Edernac with “Symphony on a single string”. These acts were developed from the 1960s and will be presented in Parisian cabarets on both banks of the Seine. Their creators do not know it yet, but they will embody, in spite of themselves and in their own way, the last conjurers of an era.

“This work provides new insights into the entire contemporary history of string magic performances. Opening with the analysis of a sequence from the film “Stolen Kisses” where Jacques Delord plays his own role as magician-storyteller, it then explains with detailed diagrams the author's rope routine. We are delighted to discover a series of visual poems whose choreographic innovations are influenced by elements of gestural and figurative language close to juggling... But this is only the beginning because then, constituting through its volume and its documentation, the essential part of the work, a masterful gallery of portraits of magicians of all nationalities is revealed to the reader. Unsurprisingly, the pride of place is given to Delord, Edernac, Merlin and Tabary. For all this, arming himself with passion and insatiable curiosity, the author carried out a real investigation and unearthed a wealth of rare videos and unpublished documents... It reveals and accurately transmits the references and means of access. And throughout the text, those who are looking for ideas or presentation avenues or who are simply curious will discover anecdotes on the touch, gestures and themes of presentation of ropes in magic; they will fly over parts of the history of stage, cabaret or television acts of the twentieth century, which remains as the golden age of string magic and still constitutes a fabulous source of inspiration. » - Jean Valsen

“String magic is a niche…at the very heart of the niche that is illusionism. While thousands of works are devoted to card magic, those dealing with “string players” are much rarer. And, among these, those which are written in a way that is both poetic, interesting and dizzyingly exhaustive simply do not exist. Well, until today. Because, La Douce Joie by Guillaume Pavot offers itself the luxury of being a unique work in its category... Page after page, it explores string magic with a sensitivity and depth that one rarely encounters in magical literature. Whether you are a string enthusiast, or simply a curious magician, this book will offer you much more than techniques: vision, inspiration, and immense reading pleasure. » - Frantz Réjasse

“Whether it is a rope, halyard, merlin or simply a rope, the accomplished study, written by Guillaume Pavot, conveys essential knowledge that every lover of rope magic must discover. It’s a more sophisticated way of looking at things, this is the example of a beautiful transmission of knowledge finely exposed in La Douce Joie. » - Didier Laurini
