Martin Gardner (1914-2010) returns to us with the 2nd and last volume of this beautiful posthumous work which constitutes the almost exhaustive compilation of the magic towers published by this author between 1930 (he was 16 years old!) And 1992.
Before being the "mathematical recreation" specialist and the great scientific popularizer we know, Martin Gardner was an emeritus and passionate magician. He regularly rubbed shoulders with Edward Marlo, Dai Vernon, Joe Berg, Senator Crandall, Frank Garcia… His magic is distinguished by tireless research of new principles, new effects. Some of its towers are direct applications of mathematical or geometric curiosities.
In this volume 2, the accent is put on the cards since it contains no less than forty. Some are of formidable technicality. The book even includes the complete content of a booklet not found entitled Cut The Cards, published in 1942, which contains fifteen varied towers: the playing cards Through the handkerchief, the bug card, the trombone card, etc. The other categories of towers are not to be outdone: cigarette towers, pieces of parts and Paris will delight readers eager for innovative and curious effects. Like that of water that boils in the glass: the magician runs cold water in it and manages to heat it without external intervention ... or that of the penetration of the knife jacket. And so many others! (including a test book)
This volume 2 has 109 laps and techniques, a bibliography provided and even an index of proper names which did not appear in the original edition.
