Johann N. HOFZINSER (1806-1875) is recognized as the “Austrian Robert Houdin”. A versatile genius magician, he preferred cartomagic, which he considered the poetry of magic. There has been multiplied innovations, to the point that his discoveries have crossed the decades and are still relevant.
Hofzinseer has never written a book. This work is a collection published in 1931 by an Austrian scholar magician, Ottokar Fischer, according to the notes taken by Hofzinseer himself.
The book has 31 routines that compete in invention, using technique (double lifting for example) but also rigged cards (double-sided cards, shutter cards, etc.), which Hofzinser often happens to be the inventor. Hofzinseer's approach is both relaxed vis-à-vis the public, which was new for the time and very rigorous, with a cheerfulness studied conscientiously. The book includes in particular the famous "Hofzinseur Culling", which consists in exchanging a card for another under the game held in spreads in the hands.
Most hofzinser towers are executed in close-ups, which, again, was new for the time. From 1857 to 1865, Hofzinser held a magic show in Vienna itself, where he performed in a show and made his cards towers whose Austrian magic enthusiasts were cooling. Students of great magicians of the time, he was quick to overcome all his masters, to the point of becoming the great pioneer in terms of modern cartomagie.
This book is an event because it is the first in French devoted to this unknown genius of magic and cards that was Hofzinseer.
